MATCH: Design & Sport – A Story Looking to the Future
MATCH: Design & Sport – A Story Looking to the Future

To mark the 2024 Olympic Games in Paris, the Musée du Luxembourg organized an exhibition on the future of design and sport, curated and designed by Konstantin Grcic, accompanied by a publication designed by Bureau Borsche.

Part of the Olympiade Culturelle program, MATCH explores the role of design in the development and progression of sport and the ties forged between these two fields. The exhibition also looks at how the sporting world has continued to inspire top designers – and vice-versa – in sectors including the automotive and ready-to-wear industries. Design plays a key role in the history of sport and increases athletic capacities by drawing on materials, sports ergonomics and esthetics to support athletes in their quest for increasingly outstanding sporting performances.
But the examples gathered in MATCH don't restrict solely to technological and performative aspects. Sport has outstanding political and social impact and the power to connect people and communities at large. With a variety of examples, MATCH highlights the ways that design can facilitate inclusion and diversity.
The exhibition design offers a meandering parcours for visitors to explore. By borrowing stylistic aspects from sports facilities, MATCH evokes the feeling of being in the middle of a sports game. MATCH wants to include visitors from every walk of life by taking care of inclusivity aspects throughout the show and delivering a poetic message for everyone to understand and perceive on more than just an intellectual level, but also in a visual and semantic way.
